My year in blogging in 2010, by the numbers

I received this e-mail from WordPress.com and thought I’d share it with you in the interest of full disclosure…or at least partial disclosure:

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

Healthy blog!

The Blog-Health-o-Meter™ reads Wow.

The average container ship can carry about 4,500 containers. This blog was viewed about 16,000 times in 2010. If each view were a shipping container, your blog would have filled about 4 fully loaded ships.

In 2010, there were 272 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 1383 posts. There were 91 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 16mb. That’s about 2 pictures per week.

The busiest day of the year was September 1st with 130 views. The most popular post that day was I am stuck on this ditty and this ditty’s stuck on me.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were networkedblogs.com, Google Reader, ow.ly, unfinishedrambler.com, and facebook.com.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for glasgow smile, vulgar songs, nerd porn, poop drops, and benton air force station. (How’s that for scary?)

These are the posts and pages that got the most views in 2010.

September: The month of monkeys, book bloggers, Rachael Ray and Margaret Bourke-White

It’s been a slow month for Unfinished Person and Unfinished Rambler. This month so far, and counting today’s post, we’ve only had 18 posts. That doesn’t mean, though, that it hasn’t been a quality month, especially with Unfinished Person writing posts for Book Blogger Appreciation Week.

The top two posts for that week, based on number of views, were:

Unfinished Rambler, meanwhile, led the way with posts with the most views with three:

  1. Rachael Ray and her Glasgow smile: Again, this post just continues to climb the stats and now is the No. 4 post (counting “Home Page”) in number of views all-time on the blog. Go visit it now and maybe it will reach No. 2 soon.
  2. I am the Monkey King, I can do anything: Where Unfinished Rambler sees the image of a monkey king in…well, you’ll just have to read the post to find out where.
  3. The post where I disillusion myself that I am a blogger: Unfinished Rambler finds humor in a situation that at least one commenter didn’t think was so funny. For the record, at least, one of us (ahem, Unfinished Person) thought the commenter had a point.

We also want to give a special shout-out to our most popular post in views all-time next to the ever-present “Home Page”:  Margaret Bourke-White: Breadline during the Louisville Flood, Kentucky 1937.  We didn’t even write it. All that it is is a reposting of a photo from a site called Masters of Photography, reposted with permission under the policies of the site. Just thinking out loud: If we reposted more photos like this, with the appropriate permission, of course, maybe it would catapult us into the blogosphere stratosphere. Oh, well, we can dream anyway.

In case you missed them, my top 10 posts…EVER!

On Sunday, I looked back at my reading in the month of August.  Today, I look back at what were my top 10 posts this past month, some of which were written this past month, others that were written earlier this year (no, these are not really my top 10 posts EVER, that was just to draw you to read this post).

Counting backwards:

10. A Heluva Good race? Eh, not really, but Jimmie Johnson wrecked. Woo hoo!: The second part of a series about my father, sister and I going to our first NASCAR race.

9. The Story of Right Hand, Left Hand: A combination Patron of the Week and Flashback Friday post, on the subject of forgiveness, and my personal favorite of the month, so if you click on only one link (which I’d prefer you click on all of them, of course, but…), then click on this link.

8. The worst part of waking up: Another post about my father, sister and I going to Watkins Glen, but with coffee as the centerpiece.

7. Up jumped the boogity, boogity, boogity: The first part of the series on our going to the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen earlier in the month.

6. Survey says: Classics can be “page-turners” too: The summation from a first part in which I asked, “Are ‘page-turners’ always ‘pulp fiction?‘ “

5. Patience for stupidity: Something I don’t have.

4. Introducing the Patron of the Week: Little Miss I-Don’t-Want-To-Pay-All-My-Fine-Because-(insert excuse here): Where I introduced my new series Patron of the Week.

3. Patrons, what a bunch of bastards: Which wasn’t a Patron of the Week part, but pretty much sums up the feelings of one of my co-workers on the subject of patrons.

2. Rachael Ray and her Glasgow smile: A post from April of this year where I was creeped out by Rachael Ray’s smile. Don’t believe me it’s creepy. Just look. I dare you.

1. Why can we defriend: A post from my new Facebook category in which I discuss the fine art of defriendship.

I also want to give special recognition to Chris for possibly the best comment of the month, in which he responded to another post from April of this year about my pet peeve of motorcyclists who ride motorcycles without helmets (scroll to the bottom of the comments for his well-thought out comment, with which I cannot disagree totally). I’m not sure if I’ll always give a special shout-out to a commenter every month, but in this case, I thought it was noteworthy that he had considered the post so thoughtfully. Thanks, Chris.

Also yesterday’s Motivation Monday post is still sitting there, waiting for a comment. Please stop by and give it a comment, so it doesn’t feel all lonely. Thanks in advance. :)

Rachael Ray and her Glasgow smile

My wife picks up Every Day with Rachael Ray every once in a while. This past month’s issue, Rachael had a particularly gruesome smile (almost a Glasgow smile, I would say) upon her countenance:

For some reason, it reminds me of this notorious character:

We had a friend visiting from South Korea earlier this month, and the copy of the magazine was on the back of our toilet. All he could say was “Could you take it off there? Her smile is freaking me out.”

And, um, no, we didn’t take it off the back of the toilet. We (meaning mostly I) took too much glee in seeing him freaked out.
