The State of The Blog, My Reading and My Life Address (TSS)

So if any of you drifted over here from one of my other blogs that recently died (again), you may be wondering what is going on in terms of body, mind and soul (the themes of those blogs and this blog) in my life. Or, to word it another way, what is going on with me in terms of running, reading and my spiritual life?

Running: Not any. After my wife and I signed up for three months for the gym at the beginning of the month, I’ve gone once. Sad but true. However, only this morning I signed up for the Idita-Walk 2010, which involves walking 30 minutes a day for 35 days from Feb. 1 to March 31 for a total of 1,049 minutes. The walk benefits Boy Scout Troop 298 in Alaska. Tomorrow, the journey begins again…

Reading: As of later today, I will have finished one book for the year.

While shelving books at the library where I work part-time, I came across this book and thought it would be appropriate with the Super Bowl coming up at the start of next month (now next week). Since then, I also have picked up Black Sunday by Thomas Harris, which was made into a 1977 movie

Again, sad but true. However, also today, I will be starting Ovid’s Metamorphoses as translated by Mary Innes as part of the Really Old Classics Challenge (click on button to go to challenge’s main page). I had taken this book out of the library last year twice, with the most recent time at the end of November, and now I have it out again. The plan is to read a little each Sunday over the next few Sundays to finish in time for the end of the challenge. Today, the journey begins again…

Spiritual life: Earlier this month, I talked with a deacon at our church about what I would need to do to become a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. Since then, I haven’t contacted the diocese, but I still am interested in applying to become one.

This past month, I participated in the Sleeping with Bread meme group four times here on this blog: Surrender, Surrender; Cats, dances and bread; On stepping into the clearing and breathing; and What is the measure of your success?

I also continue to pray The Liturgy of the Hours for Morning and Evening Prayer, something I haven’t done yet today but will do here shortly before my wife and I go to Mass. In a few minutes, the journey begins again…

In truth, the journey never ends, and as J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote, “The road goes ever on.”

  2. Elliptical machines always look like so much fun, but then I climb onto them and have a hard time exercising (I don’t know if this is because I’m really short or just uncoordinated, but they’re not my favorite). :)

    Congrats on the weight loss!

  3. Thanks for the update. I have been working on many of the same things this year. Hubs and I re-joined the gym (our local Y) and have been making time in the evenings for the other to exercise. It’s worked well for us — there is something nice about being gently nudged out the door by my spouse (or doing the nudging) for a little personal time. I’ve yet to catch him visiting the ice cream shop instead of the gym, so let’s consider ourselves successful on the exercise front.

I finished the Sun Also Rises on Friday. It was… typical for the period. I’ve never quite enjoyed books with incessant early 20th century dialogue (yes, this is you, F. Scott Fitzgerald). But Hemingway does it fairly well, so I’ll give the book a C+. Farewell to Arms remains my favorite Hemingway.

Thanks for including the Really Old Classics Challenge! I’m new to it. And since I have been looking for ‘classics’ to add to my list, this will give me a reason to dust off my old copy of the Lays of Marie de France. Thanks!

Hope you have a great week! – Julia

    • Having a spouse who is supportive is key to both diet and exercise I’ve found. It was how I originally lost nearly 100 pounds with WeightWatchers and exercise (now gained back about 30 to 40 of that and working on losing it again), and I’m sure how I’ll (we’ll) succeed again.

The Sun Also Rises actually is one of my favorite Hemingway books, but I really like Hemingway, even if my wife thinks he’s quite a downer. :)

You’re welcome on being introduced to the Really Old Classics Challenge. Only a month left, so join soon.

  4. Good luck with Ovid! I haven’t read the Metamorphoses.

I can relate to not finding time to exercise. My husband and I have been talking about what would work for us, and have decided that it’s cheaper to buy a treadmill for our house than it is to buy me a gym membership (my hubby has one at work). Granted it means I won’t have access to a lot of machines, but I think it will suit my needs as long as I have the discipline to actually use it.

    • So far, so good with the Metamorphoses here, Alyce.

As for exercise, surprisingly last week, I lost four pounds, I guess, just from walking around town. Every little bit helps. We’d get a treadmill, but we have nowhere to put it…plus I hate dreadmills. At least our gym has elliptical machines. I enjoy them much more than dreadmills. :)

  5. Yay! Hobbitses! I just finished The Hobbit, and quite enjoyed your Hobbit Walking Song :-)

Yay! for the COLTS, speaking of the Superbowl :-D Just had to put that out there. But good for the Saints, too. Second best in the NFL is a good spot ;-)

Oh, to answer your question on Viral Video Wednesday.. I had decided at the beginning of the year to set it aside for a while since 1) I was being bad and not doing my own weekly meme, and 2) I was spending all my time surfing YouTube instead of reading… lol. I figured I’d just do VVW specials every once in a while. I’ve got folders and folders of bookmarked videos still, and GLEE is adding to them.

    • Ooooh…..Gleeeee!!!! My wife loves Glee and I love Glee. We are just Glee-ful people. No, we don’t have cable, but we’ve seen it…and heard it via YouTube. Pleeease post more Glee. The world needs more.
