Iron Man: The first of three big comic book movies this summer

For this week’s Movie Monday, I talk about the latest comic book movie and look forward to the next couple of big ones that are coming:

First up, the good one:

Title: Iron Man
Director: Jon Favreau
Year: 2008
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard
Time: 126 minutes

This one lives up to the hype. I saw somewhere on one of the many trailers on YouTube about some woman in a theater claiming this was “the lamest version of Transformers EVER.” Well, she’s way wrong. I recently saw Transformers and was not that impressed with it. On the other hand, I was impressed with this version.

While it didn’t have everything, it had nearly everything: Robert Downey Jr. surprisingly as a bad-ass superhero, and he was buff too, probably from working out in prison. Plus Jeff Bridges — I mean, yeah, really? no, really, I’m not kidding — with his head shaved and as a great bad guy. Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t contribute a lot, except a little bit of romance, but the special effects, of course, were — do I need to say it? — exceptional. But the story wasn’t lost in the whiz and the bang either, like in other special effects extravaganzas — say like Transformers?

Next up:

But then, the one I can’t wait to see:
